The Ontario government is hanging tough on their promise to keep kids in school with their “Keeping Students in Class” act, because as Education Minister Stephen Lecce told MBC News children are the first priority.
CUPE, the union representing 55-thousand non-teacher school support workers in the dispute with the Ford government says it will fight the legislation in every way it can, but Lecce says the government felt forced to act.
The Union tabled a counter-proposal to the province’s latest offer last night. That provincial offer could be imposed under the tabled legislation if a deal isn’t reached soon.
The Education Minister says five months of bargaining hasn’t produced a deal thus far, and has led them to this point.
The Union still has a plan to walk out on Friday, even if they have to call it a political protest.
That will leave many parents in our listening area and beyond scrambling for child care as schools will be closed and moving to a work from home model for the day.
