The union representing 55-thousand education workers is digging in its heels and says tomorrow’s planned strike will go ahead, and it could last beyond Friday. That’s because they say if a deal isn’t reached, they’ll be off the job “until further notice.”
Education Minister Stephen Lecce fired back by saying the province won’t resume contract negotiations with CUPE unless the strike is called off.
So, it looks like a standstill unless something significant happens today.
The union presented a revised response to the contract that the Government would impose under legislation that would also ban the workers from striking. The union says they’ll take the steep fines they’d face for walking off the job.
No details have been provided on the response have been given.
Many parents of children in our local school boards have had to prepare for the possibility schools will be closed tomorrow and now perhaps beyond, as both the CDSBEO and UCDSB plan to move to remote learning if the workers strike.
