The safety factor is always paramount during winter storms, snow removed from roads and parking lots may be contaminated with salt, oil and heavy metals.
Once the snow melts, contaminants may reach groundwater or surface water – and even tap water in the end.
Conservation Authorities say local source protection plans help manage those risk.
They say, ‘Salting Responsibly’ can balance human safety on our roads, walkways and parking lots with keeping our environment and drinking water sources healthy.
They’re calling on at-risk areas to take action to prevent future damage.
