The Smiths Falls Police Services Board, alongside all Ontario police boards, have been asked to weigh in on the necessity of bail reform by way of a survey.
It’s an issue that’s been come to the forefront following the recent slaying of OPP Constable Greg Pierzchala.
During their first board meeting of 2023, SFPS Police Chief Mark MacGillivray said the killing could’ve been avoided had there been a better system in place.
MacGillivray said bail reform would protect everyone.
During the meeting, mayor Shawn Pankow was elected as chair over Rob Dopson, who voted for Pankow himself. Dopson was elected vice-chair.
Also discussed was the province exploring enhanced duties for special constables, also known as peace officers, which could include tasers for use of force situations, and the SFPS looking to hire two constables to replace outgoing ones, and one part-time dispatch officer.
