A Canada-Ukraine flag flies in Smiths Falls as a show of support
February 24th marks the one year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
It’s led to the displacement of millions of people, destruction and death.
But among the wreckage and the sorrow came stories of people wanting to help, including the group Smiths Falls Welcome Ukraine.
Mayor Shawn Pankow tipped his cap to the group for helping refugees settle here as the anniversary arrives.
About 150,000 Ukrainians fled to Canada under a special visa program, and many are assessing their future plans.
Lake 88 will be speaking with the chair of Smiths Falls Welcome Ukraine next week for an in-depth feature.
