This is great news for local endangered species, as their homes are now safe for over 900 years.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada announced the complete protection of ecologically sensitive lands surrounding Loon Lake.
The area, in the southern part of our listening area, is the latest small but significant land parcel at Glen’s Cove, located at the east end of the lake.
We spoke with Rob McRae, program director for Eastern Ontario with NCC, who told us about this land.
Development will be limited on the land and it will remain as wildlife habitat.
NCC reached this conservation agreement with land owner Monte Hummel.
The protected area provides habitat for over 30 species at risk, including monarch butterfly, snapping turtle, nighthawk, whip-poor-will and five-lined skink.
