United Counties of Leeds and Grenville approved their budget in March and included a 6.87% tax rate increase.
Warden Nancy Peckford said the original increase was 10%, and the mayors across the horseshoe worked their way to whittle it down.
She says it was a balancing act between minimizing the impact on taxpayers wallets, while also ensuring their services can continue.
She adds that balancing those pressures was a shared headache of all municipal leaders across Ontario during budget talks.
As a mother of three, Peckford said she fully understands the impact of inflation on everyone’s daily lives, but in the end the inflationary pressures seen on roads, long-term care and paramedic services required further investment.
