The new Confederation Bridge is moving on to the design phase.
After looking at other options with Parks Canada, staff and council decided to move ahead with a pedestrian-only bridge which was approved by a 4-3 vote in January.
Mayor Shawn Pankow sees the new $1.22 million bridge as an opportunity greater than getting people from point A to point B.
Councillor Chris McGuire thinks the new bridge could be a point of pride in Smiths Falls and wants prospective designers to get creative.
Councillors Stephen Robinson, Jay Brennan and Dawn Quinn have been long-standing advocates for the bridge to include vehicle access and once again voiced their objections Monday.
