As spring arrives, it’s important to remember to be mindful of bears. Due to the scarcity of natural food sources, bears who have recently woken up from hibernation often scavenge for food in garbage cans and bird feeders.
To prevent an unwelcome visitor, the OPP advises storing garbage in tightly sealed waste containers and waiting until pickup day to put it out. It’s also important to keep pet food indoors, clean barbecue grills thoroughly after each use to remove any residue or grease, and replace bird feeders with natural alternatives such as fresh water and flowers for the season.
If you encounter a bear in your area, you can find a non-emergency 24/7 phone number on our website to call.
However if the bear is displaying aggressive behavior, it’s best to call 9-1-1.
