The 22nd annual Relay for Life is Friday at St. John Catholic High School.
Teacher and long-time event coordinator David Peters expects another year of community and student support.
This year, the school’s rallied around one of their own, and it’s helped motivate fundraising.
Last year students raised a record-setting $73,000 and are poised to pass that total this year.
The school has raised over $879,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society since Relay for Life began.
Peters wishes he could pinpoint a reason why the student body rallies behind the event each year.
The opening lap Friday begins at 9:30, before a cancer survivor reception follows at 5 p.m., leading up to the opening ceremony at 6.
Members of the public are invited to attend the event.
St. John students will then hit the stage to play music, as will special guest band The Ramblers as students walk the track throughout the day and night.
Peters says they’ll move the day indoors if the air quality remains poor but hopes that’s not the case.
