According to a report by the BC Care Providers Association, Canada’s long-term care sector is ill-equipped to meet the needs of the rapidly growing aging population. The number of individuals aged 85 and above has more than doubled since the 2001 census and is projected to triple in the next 25 years.
Carey Duncan, Executive Director of Lanark Lodge, expresses deep concern about this issue, stating that it keeps her up at night. She emphasizes the urgent need for additional support and resources to address this mounting challenge.
Duncan highlights the importance of shifting the focus within long-term care homes, suggesting a move away from a task-oriented approach towards empowering residents to have a say in the care they receive. This shift aims to ensure that residents feel valued and empowered in their own care journey.
