Lanark County recently voted in favor of reopening the Andrewsville Bridge, but the ultimate decision rests with the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville (UCLG). While Lanark County is eager to reopen the jointly-shared bridge, UCLG officials still need to determine if they will follow suit.
During a council meeting, Sean Derouin, Lanark County’s Public Works Director, informed council members that UCLG staff expressed their disapproval of reopening the bridge. The fate of the Andrewsville Bridge now lies in the hands of the UCLG council, who will make the final decision.
To ensure the bridge’s safety, Lanark County plans to conduct regular weekly inspections, in addition to other monitoring methods. Despite Lanark County’s insurers opposing the reopening, the most recent site inspection indicated no significant changes in the bridge’s condition since the previous review in 2021.
Derouin acknowledged the potential insurance coverage issues that may arise if the bridge reopens, but emphasized that recent inspections have not revealed any compelling reasons to keep it closed. However, UCLG staff informed Lake 88 that unless there are notable changes, the Andrewsville bridge is not slated for discussion prior to their summer break in August.
The reopening of the Andrewsville Bridge remains uncertain as UCLG deliberates the decision. Lanark County will await further developments and continue to prioritize the bridge’s well-being to ensure the safety of all who utilize it.
