Provincial and local leaders were on hand in Smiths Falls on Wednesday to welcome five new rent geared-to-income properties at 188 Chambers Street.
Lanark County warden Peter McLaren says the accessibility aspect of the build is key.
McLaren believes the current waitlist for affordable housing units throughout the county is five years, and says all levels of government is doing what they can to catch the supply up to the demand.
The five units, four one-bedrooms and one bachelor apartment, are all barrier-free with two designed for wheelchair users.
Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP John Jordan said everyone should have a place to lay their head at night.
These units were funded through $1.63 million from the province’s Social Services Relief Fund.
The building opened its doors to residents on June 1st.
