Local CUPE 2577 entered strike action for the first time in history when a deal couldn’t be reached between union representatives and Family and Children Services of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville.
They’ve been without a collective agreement since March 2022, and have been negotiating on and off since then.
Recruitment and Assessment Worker Krista McKay says they seek higher pay, smaller caseloads, and additional staff.
McKay says there’s too many files for case managers to handle.
Arlette Carrier is at the table representing the union, and doesn’t think the sides are close to a deal.
FCSLLG has about 95 unionized workers while about 29 others including management are not.
In previous statements to media, FCSLLG have said they remain open at a reduced capacity.
“…protecting children and youth in immediate need of protection will remain our first priority. We will do everything we can to respond to all requests to the very best of our abilities. If you are concerned about the safety of a child or youth, please do not hesitate to contact the Agency,” it read in part.
