Smiths Falls Deputy Police Chief Jodi Empey spoke to the second-degree murder guilty plea of Kevin Ramage, who killed his partner and mother of four Chantal Lebrun at the latest police services board meeting.
Ramage was initially charged by police with first-degree murder.
Empey says everyone worked hard to secure a conviction following the Boxing Day slaying in 2021.
The deputy chief says they’d like to see life in prison without parole an option in the Canadian justice system, but is pleased this outcome provided some sort of closure for Lebrun’s daughters and family.
Empey said of course there’s no guarantee he’s granted parole when the time comes, and expressed gratitude to everyone at SFPS who worked hard on the file to ensure a conviction was secured for the sake of the family.
