Winter is on the horizon in Lanark and Leeds County, with some forecasts calling for snow as early as next week.
That means if you haven’t already, it’s time to get your gardens and grounds ready for the chilly months ahead. The warm weather at the end of September had some of us putting off the annual outdoor prep work.
Here are 8 quick tips to ensure your outdoor space remains in great shape during winter:
- Clear Debris: Remove fallen leaves and branches to prevent them from suffocating your plants.
- Protect Perennials: Mulch your perennials to insulate them from the cold.
- Trim Shrubs: Prune your shrubs to prevent winter damage from heavy snow.
- Garden Cleanup: Remove dead annuals and clean up your garden beds.
- Lawn Care: Apply winter fertilizer.
- Secure Structures: Store outdoor furniture and ornaments to prevent damage.
- Pre-Winter Weeding: Remove any weeds to stop them from spreading. You’ll be glad you did come Spring!
- Check Your Tools: Ensure your winter tools like shovels and snowblowers are ready for action and readily available.
With these tips, your gardens and grounds will be winter-ready and you’ll be good to come when the warm weather returns.
