On this week’s Grant Can Cook, I tackled the Monte Cristo Sandwich.
I was seeking some inspiration for this week’s meal, and it was our very own Adam Weekes who came up with this quick and easy suggestion. If you haven’t heard of this sandwich before, it’s basically a fancier version of a ham and cheese.
It was perfect for my continued hunt of low-effort cooking recipes. I say this because it was a simple creation, but also required more time and effort than putting some meat between bread and calling it a day. The result was a good meal and another recipe added to the cook book.
I built my sammy off another recipe but changed things up to make it my own. Below is what I included in mine.
Here’s what you need:
- 1-2 large eggs
- Bread slices
- Swiss Cheese
- 2-4 slices of black forest ham
- 2-4 slices of smoked meat
Here’s what you do:
- create the sandwich of your dreams
- whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl
- dip the already-made sandwich into the whisked eggs, carefully. Make sure the bread’s covered in the yoke, but not drenched in it.
- Put the sandwich that looks so good it looks like it belongs in a movie onto a non-stick pan over the stove-top on medium heat. Make sure before you do, you break out some butter/margarine to melt on the pan.
- Cook for about 3-4 minutes until it’s golden brown or your desired colour.
Bone apple tea.
I threw in some pepper and light paprika in my egg mixture to boost the flavour a little bit, and had a little bit of ketchup on the bread as well. Entirely optional, you can use whatever spread you want. I think a spicy mustard would be nice but I didn’t have any. You do and what what you want, I won’t tell.
