This is Snowmobile Safety Week.
The OPP says the goal is to raise awareness about safe snowmobiling, and to prevent snowmobilers from taking unnecessary risks, like travelling on unsafe ice, or going to fast.
Over the last decade, nearly 158 snowmobilers tragically failed to return to their families due to largely avoidable accidents while riding. Key contributing factors included excessive speed given the conditions, consumption of alcohol or drugs, and traversing hazardous frozen water bodies.
Alcohol or drug use was associated with 41 percent of the fatalities, while 36 percent of these incidents took place on frozen lakes and rivers within OPP jurisdictions.
The week got off to a sad start with a fatal collision reported in Renfrew County over the Family Day weekend that took the life of a 29 year-old while leaving another with serious injuries.
We’ll have more later this week.
