A Remembrance Day Real-World Learning project that saw students visit a local cemetery to place stones on veterans’ graves uncovered a local soldier whose name is missing from the Almonte Cenotaph.
Now, the Almonte Legion says they are looking to correct the mistake, after a persuasive presentation from R. Tait McKenzie Public School students.
Almonte resident Private George B Monterville fought for Canada from 1914-1919 before returning home following a string of minor injuries and exposure to gas. He died the following year with severe lung disease from war-related injuries.
He was buried in the Auld Kirk Cemetery but was never added to the Cenotaph.
Now the 100-year-old oversight will be corrected after the students presented the finding to the Legion, who will add Monterville’s name to the Cenotaph.
