Smiths Falls council became the first in Lanark County to support basic income, by a narrow 4-3 vote.
Mayor Shawn Pankow echoed his thoughts from the discussion on the matter at a previous committee of the whole meeting, saying the status quo isn’t working and something needs to change.
Councilors Brennan, Dawn Quinn, and Stephen Robinson, who were against bringing the motion forward to council, remained in opposition of a program and voted against it Monday.
With the motion still passing, the town’s will be calling on the federal and provincial government to collaborate on a national basic income program, and will ask other municipalities for support.

Shame on Councillors Bennan, Quinn and Robinson for not voting in favour of a basic income program.
Corporate welfare and privateering by big business donors of a political party is not an efficient methodology for income distribution – aka: trickledown
Far better, to have a basic income that injects money directly into the market place (recipients are poor they have to spend on basic survival needs) ; thus, basic income makes money available to businesses – who are willing to compete in the market place not gladhand political operatives.
This is not going in the right direction.
