The Ontario bail system is something Smiths Falls Police have talked about before in needing to be reformed and another example why happened recently.
35-year-old Ben Duhamel was arrested July 22nd following a suspicious person and vehicle complaint.
The accused was charged with two counts of breach of his release order set on July 17th, one for being in the town of Smiths Falls and secondly for being outside his residence without a surety, as well as possession of a controlled substance.
He has a fourth bail hearing date set later this month.
In January, Lanark County passed along a supporting motion to end what many call the “catch and release,” bail system.
Smiths Falls Police Chief Jodi Empey recently spoke to 88.1 myFM about frequent lawbreakers posting bail in relation to property crime.
